5 types of logos

Logos have been around since the beginning of commerce in America. The great ones are the ones that last forever. Even if they get altered over the years as the company grows and expands, you’ll find that a perfect logo can imprint itself into the consumer’s consciousness. Logos are vital for branding and brand recognition.

There are many different types of logo designs to consider when you are starting your brand. Entrepreneurs and businesses who use them correctly to build a strong brand can become memorable and achieve exponential growth.

5 Types of Logos to Consider for Your Brand Identity

A logo can be a simple graphic, complicated character, or even just a letter done in a great font. Below we discuss the various logo designs, the iconic global organizations that are using them, and tips on how you can develop and showcase your own.

Symbol or Icon (Brandmark)

Simple, yet bold the icon is used as an abstract representation of a company's identity.  This logomark is popular among global organizations because it expresses ideas better than plain text, can break through language barriers, and is rememberable.

Some of the most famous examples include McDonald's and Target.

Emblem

An emblem is a mark in which text is placed inside of a symbol to resemble a badge or seal. It’s a little more complicated than the symbol, but can be equally as effective for recognition among consumers. Traditional in appearance, emblem logos are popular among government institutions. However, several commercial organizations have modernized this logo form. Some famous examples are the NFL and Starbucks.

Wordmark

Text-based, the wordmark is viewed at the most powerful type of logo. It's uniquely styled and colored to include a company's name. And like the iconic logo, wordmarks are easily recognized and remembered among the masses. Two global organizations that have powerful wordmarks are Ray Ban and Google.

Lettermark

When it comes to logo design types, the lettermark is as simple as it gets. Unlike the wordmark, the lettermark uses fewer letters. This kind of logo can be either a business' initials (like a monogram) or an abbreviation of a company's name. Very easy to recognize, some famous examples are ESPN and HP.

Combination Mark

The most common type of logo, the combination mark combines both text and a symbol. Combination marks are adopted by companies because the graphic allows for them to tell their story while the text allows them to attach a name to the graphic. Some companies who have well-designed combination marks are Adidas and the restaurant chain, Burger King.
